The risks and controls

  • Default credentials — many devices ship with weak, well-known passwords (a top IoT risk). Change them.
  • Poor update mechanisms — devices are rarely patched, leaving known vulnerabilities.
  • Botnets — compromised IoT devices are conscripted into large botnets (e.g. Mirai) for DDoS.
  • Controlssegment IoT onto its own network (segmentation), harden and inventory devices, and manage their lifecycle.
