Networking connects everything you support. A+ expects you to understand IP addressing, common ports and protocols, and how devices communicate across a network.

Beginner: the basics

  • IPv4 addresses (e.g. 192.168.1.10) and the idea of private vs public ranges.
  • DHCP hands out IP addresses automatically; DNS resolves names to IPs.
  • Default gateway — the router that connects your subnet to other networks.
