PC hardware is the foundation of the A+ Core 1 exam and of everyday IT support. You need to recognise components on sight, understand what each does, and know how they fit together.

Beginner: the basics

  • CPU — the processor; key specs are cores, clock speed and socket type (Intel LGA, AMD AM4/AM5).
  • RAM — volatile working memory; know DDR3/DDR4/DDR5 and DIMM vs SO-DIMM (laptops).
  • Storage — HDD (spinning, cheap, slower) vs SSD (fast, no moving parts), M.2/NVMe vs SATA.
  • Motherboard — form factors ATX, microATX, mini-ITX; hosts CPU, RAM and expansion slots.
  • PSU — the power supply converts mains AC to the DC rails components use.

Intermediate concepts

  • PCIe expansion slots (x1, x4, x16) for GPUs and add-in cards.
  • Connector and cable types: SATA, USB-A/C, HDMI, DisplayPort, Thunderbolt.

Do I need to build a PC to pass A+ hardware?

No, but hands-on practice helps enormously. Building or upgrading a real machine — or watching detailed teardowns — makes the components far easier to remember for the performance-based questions.

What is the difference between DDR4 and DDR5 RAM?

DDR5 is a newer generation offering higher bandwidth and capacity than DDR4. They are not interchangeable — the notch position and slot differ, so the motherboard dictates which you use.

Is A+ hardware still relevant with so much in the cloud?

Yes. Even cloud-first organisations rely on physical laptops, desktops and peripherals that IT support must set up, repair and replace, so hardware fundamentals remain core to the role.
