Certifications signal credibility to employers and structure your learning. Here's how the major project management qualifications fit together — and which to target at each career stage.
Predictive / structured qualifications
- PRINCE2 Foundation — the UK/Europe standard for structured, stage-gated delivery. Entry-level, no experience required. Great first certification.
- PRINCE2 Practitioner — applies PRINCE2 to real scenarios; for those managing projects.
- CAPM (Certified Associate in Project Management) — PMI's entry certificate; strong on terminology and the PMBOK body of knowledge.
- PMP (Project Management Professional) — PMI's flagship, globally recognised; requires documented experience. The gold standard for experienced PMs and now covers predictive, agile and hybrid.
Agile qualifications
- PSM I (Professional Scrum Master) / PSPO I (Product Owner) — from Scrum.org; rigorous, respected Scrum credentials.
- CSM (Certified ScrumMaster) — from Scrum Alliance; course-based alternative.
- AgilePM (Agile Project Management) — combines agile delivery with governance (DSDM); popular where structure and agility must coexist.
Programme & portfolio
- MSP (Managing Successful Programmes) — for coordinating multiple projects toward a strategic outcome.
- MoP / P3O — portfolio management and PMO design for senior roles.
How to choose
- Starting out → CAPM or PRINCE2 Foundation plus PSM I to cover both worlds.
- Managing projects → PRINCE2 Practitioner or PMP.
- Agile environment → PSM/PSPO or AgilePM.
- Moving up → MSP (programmes), then MoP/P3O (portfolio/PMO).
