Modern HR runs on systems and data. Being confident with HR systems, accurate records and basic people analytics makes you far more employable — and helps the business make good, fair decisions.
HR information systems (HRIS)
An HRIS/HR system (e.g. workday-style platforms, BambooHR, SAP SuccessFactors, PeopleHR) is the single source of truth for employee records, contracts, absence, holidays, performance and more. HR administrators and advisors use it daily to maintain accurate data and run reports. Employers value people who learn systems quickly.
Accurate records and the basics done well
Contracts, right-to-work documents, personal details, absence and holiday, and training records must be accurate, up to date and secure. Reliable data underpins pay, compliance and every people decision — 'the basics done brilliantly' is a real HR strength.
Key HR metrics
- Labour turnover — the rate people leave (and its cost).
- Absence rate — e.g. the Bradford Factor for frequent short absences.
- Time-to-hire and cost-per-hire — recruitment efficiency.
- Retention and engagement — how well you keep and motivate people.
- Diversity metrics — representation and fairness.
People analytics
People analytics turns HR data into insight — spotting turnover hotspots, predicting attrition, evaluating what drives engagement, or checking pay equity. Even simple, well-presented data ('turnover in team X doubled after Y') helps leaders act. You don't need to be a data scientist — clear, honest reporting is the foundation.
Data protection (UK GDPR)
HR handles highly sensitive personal data. Under UK GDPR / Data Protection Act 2018, only collect what you need, keep it secure and accurate, retain it no longer than necessary, and respect data subject rights. Confidentiality and lawful handling are non-negotiable in HR.
Presenting HR data honestly
Choose the right measure for the question, show trends and context, avoid misleading charts, and be clear about what the data can and can't tell you — the same honesty that runs through good HR.
Put it to work
Pick one HR metric and describe what a rising trend might mean and what you'd investigate. Then run a real HR scenario in the HR Simulations.
