Modern sales runs on a CRM and a disciplined pipeline. Employers expect you to keep accurate records, forecast honestly and manage your own activity — it's a core, tested skill and a common reason reps under- or over-perform.
The CRM (Salesforce, HubSpot, Pipedrive)
A CRM is where you record every prospect, contact, activity and deal. It's not admin for its own sake — it's how you (and your manager) see what's happening, follow up on time, and forecast. Learn to:
- Log activities and next steps for every account.
- Keep contact and deal data accurate and up to date.
- Use it to prioritise who to work today. Most CRMs offer free tiers and certifications (e.g. HubSpot, Salesforce Trailhead) that look great on a CV.
Pipeline hygiene
A clean pipeline reflects reality. Good hygiene means:
- Every deal has a stage, value, expected close date and clear next step.
- Stale deals are reviewed and progressed or closed-lost honestly.
- No "happy ears" — deals aren't inflated or left open to look busy. A clean pipeline you trust is worth far more than a big, fictional one.
Moving deals through stages
Each stage has exit criteria (what must be true to advance). Know the next best action for every deal, and always leave a call/meeting with a clear, agreed next step and date — never "I'll follow up sometime".
Forecasting
Forecasting is predicting what you'll close. Do it honestly using:
- Stage and probability (weighted pipeline).
- Expected close dates.
- Commit vs best-case categories. An accurate, conservative forecast builds trust; sandbagging or over-promising both damage credibility.
Time & activity management
You control your activity. Block time for prospecting, protect it, and prioritise the deals and actions that move the number. Consistency beats bursts.
Put it to work
For three imaginary deals, write the stage, value, close date and next step. Then read account management & retention.
