A marketing campaign is a coordinated set of activities, across channels, working towards a specific goal over a set period. Campaign management — planning, running and measuring them — is where all the marketing skills come together, and it's exactly what employers hire executives and managers to do.
What an integrated campaign is
'Integrated' means the campaign works across multiple channels (social, email, PPC, content, PR) with a consistent message and creative, so every touchpoint reinforces the same story. Coordinated campaigns far outperform disconnected activity.
Start with a campaign brief
A good campaign starts with a brief that aligns everyone:
- Objective — the SMART goal (e.g. "500 sign-ups in 6 weeks").
- Audience — who it's for (personas).
- Key message & proposition — what you're saying and why it matters.
- Channels & tactics — where and how.
- Budget & timeline.
- Success measures — the KPIs.
Plan the channels and content
Map activity across the funnel and channels, decide the content and creative needed, and build a timeline so assets are ready before launch. This is where a content calendar and social plan come in.
Manage budget, time and stakeholders
Campaign management is also project management: track the budget, hit deadlines, coordinate designers/agencies/colleagues, manage dependencies, and keep stakeholders informed. Organisation and communication are as important as creativity.
Launch and monitor
When live, monitor daily: is delivery on track, is spend efficient, are early results in line with the objective? Be ready to optimise in-flight (adjust budgets, creative or targeting).
Measure and report
After (and during) the campaign, measure results against the objective and KPIs: what worked, what didn't, the ROI, and what you'd do differently next time. A clear, honest post-campaign report — with insights, not just numbers — is a hallmark of a strong marketer.
Put it to work
Write a one-line objective and three channels for a campaign you'd run for a brand you know. Then try the campaign build simulation and revisit the career roadmap.
